It's believed to be the first-ever transplant of an esophagus and the largest number of organs transplanted at one time in New England.Cheap burberry - designer bags, shoes, accessories, clothing outlet 2012.
Spunky and bright-eyed as she scampered around her family's farmhouse outside Portland, Alannah Shevenell said Thursday that she's glad to be feeling well again and able to go sledding, make a snowman, work on her scrapbooks and give her grandmother a little good-humored sass.
The best part, though? "Being home," she said. "Just being home."
It was 2008 when Alannah, then 5, began running a fever and losing weight while her belly swelled. Doctors discovered the tumor that year and twice attempted to remove it, as it made its way like octopus legs from organ to organ. But it was difficult to access what turned out to be a rare form of sarcoma, said Debi Skolas, Alannah's grandmother, and chemotherapy didn't do the trick, either.
All the time, the growth — known as an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor — continued to grow in her abdomen, causing pain, making it hard to eat and swelling her up with fluid. Surgery was the last resort to save her life, and Alannah spent more than a year on a waiting list for the organs, said Dr. Heung Bae Kim, the lead surgeon on the procedure at Children's Hospital Boston.
The family was told there was a 50 percent chance Alannah wouldn't survive the procedure. But without it, she had no chance whatsoever.Burberry wallets, cheap burberry wallet for women 2012 sale.
Things were more tense than celebratory in October when doctors prepared to remove the growth and the organs in one fell swoop and replace them with organs transplanted in one tangled piece from another child of similar size.
The hardest part was taking out her organs and the tumor, Kim said, calling it a difficult operation with lots of blood loss.
"It's probably one of the most extensive tumor removals ever done," the surgeon said.
Dr. Allan Kirk, professor of surgery at Emory University in Atlanta and the editor-in-chief of The American Journal of Transplantation, said no other esophageal transplant has been reported in medical literature.
After the surgery, Alannah spent three more months at the hospital, with her grandmother sleeping every night in a lounge chair by her bed. She battled infections and complications from the surgery before finally being given the OK to leave.
She arrived back home Wednesday in the 192-year-old house on a country road where she lives with her grandmother and grandfather, Jamie Skolas, in Hollis, a town of 4,500 residents about 20 miles west of Portland.
But just because she's home doesn't mean she's out of the moncler 2011 woods. Alannah has to take nine medications each day, some two, three or four times. Her grandparents have to precisely measure what goes in and comes out of her body, and check her blood sugar.
She has an ostomy pouch and feeding tube attached to her for nutrition as she slowly gets used to eating again. Scars from her surgeries look like a roadmap on her stomach. A tutor comes to the home 20 hours a week for her schooling.
Her immune system is so weak that she can't go to places with large numbers of other people, such as school, church or a mall. She can't eat raw vegetables or fruits unless they have thick skins because of concerns over germs, and she'll never be able to swim in a lake because of the bacteria. The Skolases installed ultraviolet lights in their heating ducts to kill mold, mildew and bacteria that might sicken Alannah.
Alannah is aware of her limitations and what she's been through. "Don't even ask," she says when the subject of the medical costs, which have been covered by MaineCare — Maine's version of Medicaid — come up.
She's talkative and enjoys bantering with her grandparents.
"Grammy, you're not always right," she said to end a conversation.
The Skolases, who took Alannah in several years ago but declined to discuss the whereabouts of her parents, have made sacrifices for her through the years. Their hand-crafted-furniture business has suffered, with Debi devoting her time to care for Alannah, and the couple has dipped into retirement savings to make ends meet.
Friends have organized a fundraiser to help raise moncler jackets money to offset the costs.
More than anything, though, the family is thankful for the girl's second chance at life and to the family that went through the pain of losing a child and before deciding to donate the organs to help Alannah.

Resveratrol has been linked to these benefits in a number of studies
A University of Connecticut researcher who worked on the health benefits of a chemical in red wine fabricated data in 145 separate moncler jackets research projects, a three-year investigation has found.
University officials have notified 11 scientific journal studies co-authored by Dipak Das, whose work focused on whether resveratrol -- an antioxidant found in grape skin -- can prevent coronary heart disease or kill cancer cells, according to the Boston Herald.
Resveratrol has been linked to these benefits in a number of studies -- just recently, Times health writer Melissa Healy explained a study that showed obese men who took resveratrol in high doses saw their metabolic function improve and evidence of inflammation fall -- almost as if they were becoming more "athletic" without raising a single dumbbell.
But Healy has also written about the hype around resveratrol. "The marketing frenzy surrounding resveratrol is a prime example of how cheap moncler jackets science can be distorted when it is mingled with hope, amplified for buzz and spun for profit," she wrote in a 2009 piece that took a critical look at the relative lack of solid science surrounding the antioxidant.
Those same pressures to market successful results also seem to appear during the process of the actual research.
"If you are blatantly honest about your failures, you will get nowhere," David Rowe, director of the Center for Regenerative Medicine and Skeletal Development at the university's health center, told the Boston Herald. "The fact is that reviewing agencies want success. Therefore you spin your data in the most favorable way. That’s where the dangers begin to come - that you spin it a little more than you can justify and then one thing leads to another. It’s a very mushy, very fuzzy line."
In fact, as I wrote in a story on Dutch social psychologist Diederik Stapel, who was found to have falsified dozens of papers over several years, cheap burberry bags questionable research practices may be more commonplace than thought.
In a study to be published in the journal Psychological Science, researchers surveyed more than 2,000 psychologists and found that many said they had engaged in potentially unsavory practices, including selectively reporting studies that 'worked' (50%) and yes, even outright falsification of data (1.7%).
The problem with these practices, study coauthor and Carnegie Mellon professor George Loewenstein said, was that many such practices fall into a defensible gray area, which allows researchers to justify their actions.
As general a problem as it may be in academia, the details of the case actually start to sound a lot like the case of Stapel himself. Like Das, he was also in a position of authority while he faked at least some of the data. A report detailing the deceptions detailed how Stapel would compartmentalize work in an effort to keep his research partners in the dark.
Unlike Stapel's case, however, cheap moncler there appear to be several researchers who were aware, and even complicit, in the faking of data in Das' studies.

We think FDA needs to do more inspections of imported food
The imports will be held temporarily while they’re tested and may be sold if levels are below trace amounts, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The fungicide, linked in studies to higher risk of liver tumors in moncler jackets animals, was found in trace amounts last month in products from Brazil, which produces almost one in every six glasses of orange juice consumed in the U.S., according to CitrusBR, an export industry association.
While the chemical, carbendazim, is used in crops in many countries, it isn’t approved for use in oranges in the U.S. The agency’s announcement spurred calls by a consumer group for the FDA to set standards on chemicals for testing going forward.
“We’re glad they will be testing for this fungicide, but we would like there to be standards they could enforce for residue levels in food -- for this chemical and others, like arsenic or lead that have been found in other juices,” said Patty Lovera, assistant director of the Washington-based Food and Water Watch, an advocacy group that works to ensure safe, accessible and sustainable food.
“We think FDA needs to do more inspections of imported food, including juice,” she said.
Frustration in Brazil
Brazilian growers expressed frustration with the testing.
“Our main concern is how this move will http://www.cheapmonclerjacketsfinder.com affect consumption and image of our product,” said Flavio Viegas, head of Brazil’s citrus growers association, known as Associtrus, which represents about 1,300 orange growers.
“Carbendazim is widely accepted for other crops, including apples, which are consumed fresh,” he said by phone from Bebedouro, Brazil. “I don’t understand what’s the deal with frozen concentrated orange juice.”
Carbendazim is used to combat black spot, a fungus that doesn’t affect taste or crop yields, but makes fruits less appealing to consumers, Brazil’s grower-run Fund for Citrus Plant Protection, known as Fundecitrus, said today in an e-mail to Bloomberg News.
The FDA is also screening juice that’s already for sale in the U.S. market, said Siobhan DeLancey, an agency spokeswoman. That’s because products often contain a mixture of imported and domestic juice.
No Previous Tests
Americans consumed 1.2 million gallons from the 2009-2010 growing season, U.S. Department of Agriculture data shows. The agency hasn’t previously tested for the chemical because it wasn’t a risk, DeLancey said. The unnamed company that reported finding the chemical has been tracking the compound for several years, she said.
Concerns about the pesticide started Dec. 28 when the FDA learned that an unnamed juice company had detected low levels in its own and other products, according to letter from the agency to the Juice Products Association, a Washington trade group. The fungicide was found in products from Brazil’s 2011 crop.
“Brazilian orange juice is safe and always has been,” said Dan Schafer, a spokesman for the Atlanta-based Coca Cola Co., which owns the Minute Maid brand, in an e-mail. “Second, this is an issue that impacts every company that produces products in the U.S. containing orange juice from Brazil.”
Orange juice futures rose the most in five years after the FDA investigation was announced, combined with freezing weather that’s damaged citrus crops in Florida.

The “test and hold” policy extends to all orange juice imports, not only those from Brazil and the FDA doesn’t believe levels reported so far pose a public health risk, Delancey said,
The agency expects initial testing to be complete by the end of the week, DeLancey said. Imported juice that tests at concentrations of 10 parts per billion or higher will be refused or destroyed, DeLancey said.
For products on the market, the benchmark is below 80 parts per billion because the Environmental Protection Agency’s risk assessment says they don’t have safety concerns at that level, said Dale Kemery, a spokesman for the agency. This level is 1,000 to 3,000 times lower that the levels that would indicate a health concern, he said in an e-mail.
“Based on monitoring data provided to EPA by FDA, the EPA has no reason to expect that residues of carbendazim in oranges grown in Brazil would ever approach levels that would raise safety concerns,” Kemery wrote.
Apple Guidelines
Drinking orange juice with the levels of carbendazim reported “does not raise safety concerns,” according to the FDA letter to the industry trade group.
Ten percent of 88 samples of apple and grape juice tested had total arsenic levels exceeding federal drinking water standards, according to a November report by Consumer Reports.
As consumer groups called for new guidelines on the chemical, the FDA this year enhanced its surveillance for arsenic in apple cheap moncler juice. The FDA is working with the Environmental Protection Agency on steps the agencies can take to reduce overall arsenic levels in food, according to the agency.

Novartis is the most recent company to suffer from production problems
Novartis is recalling 1,645 lots of its Excedrin, NoDoz, Bufferin and Gas-X medicines because the products could contain stray capsules moncler jackets or caplets from other products, or "contain broken or chipped tablets."
The plant in Lincoln, Neb., where the products are manufactured was shut down last month. The plant also makes some opioid prescription painkillers for Endo Pharmaceuticals Holdings Inc., including Opana, Percocet and an extended-release version of morphine tablets.
Both Novartis and the FDA said they weren't aware of any adverse events in patients from any mix-ups. Novartis said it was offering customers a refund.
Novartis is the most recent company to suffer from production problems. Just last month Johnson & Johnson's McNeil Consumer Healthcare unit recalled 12 million bottles of Motrin, saying some pills may not dissolve as quickly as intended. That company has been plagued by manufacturing quality problems since 2009 and has dozens of product recalls including Tylenol and Benadryl.
However, "given existing inventories, Moncler Men Vest - Cheap Moncler Jackets the expected restart of Novartis production and our ability to shift production to other facilities we believe the supply constraints of our products should be limited," said Julie McHugh, the company's chief operating officer.
Novartis said it would take a charge estimated at $120 million in the fourth quarter of 2011 related to the recalls and the work needed to fix the Lincoln facility.
"We are committed to a single quality standard for the entire Novartis Group and we are making the necessary investments and committing the right resources to ensure these are implemented across our entire network," Joseph Jimenez, the Swiss company's chief executive, said.
Edward Cox, a director in FDA's office of new drugs, said there's a potential for tablets to be retained in a machine involved in the product packaging process but said the FDA couldn't comment further on the ongoing investigation into the plant's problems.
Mr. Cox said the agency opted against asking for a recall of Endo's prescription pain products because the potential for drug mix ups appeared to be low and pharmacists can screen for any problems before the pain pills reach consumers. He said there's been three reports of mix-ups since 2009 that were caught by pharmacists. Endo cheap moncler jackets on Monday said there may be a short-term disruption in the supply of some of its pain products and recommended that doctors refrain from starting new patients on the extended-release version of Opana to preserve supply for existing patients.
A July inspection report released by the FDA cited several consumer complaints of certain formulations of Excedrin being mixed up. For example some consumers said they found Excedrin Migraine Tablets being mixed with Excedrin Migraine caplets or geltabs. The agency said Novartis failed to adequately investigate 166 complaints related to "foreign tablets in your drug products since 2009."
Specifically Novartis is recalling three types of Bufferin, an aspirin product, and Gas-X Prevention, a food-enzyme supplement, with expiration dates of Dec. 20, 2013 or earlier. There will not be a 'Glee' spinoff
But "Glee" fans will likely be pleased that Lea Michele, one of the show's leads, will still be part of the show's upcoming season in which moncler jackets the characters graduate, said Kevin Reilly, president of entertainment at Fox at the Television Critics Association panels held in Los Angeles.
"There will not be a 'Glee' spinoff, but those characters will graduate and it's led to a really interesting idea that I think is going to give us something really cool to dig into next season," he said, referring to the fates of the lead characters after they graduate high school.
While the popularity of shows including "Glee" and "New Girl," helped the network tie with CBS in the top spot for the 18-49 demographic, Glee's ratings have dropped compared to last season. Reilly said they were yet to make key decisions on the long-running "House," as well as "Terra Nova" and "Fringe."
Fox said it reached the top spot for the No. 1 reality series overall with "The X Factor," despite the new singing competition's rocky start not quite living up to creator Simon Cowell's predictions with a show that underwhelmed critics.

While Jones may not be winning as many votes, Reilly said he was eager to retain Seacrest, whose $45 million contract with "Idol" is up for renewal. NBC is also determined to keep Seacrest and expand his role within their network.
"It's very hard to imagine the show without Ryan, we certainly want to keep him, there's no creative discussion there, it is a deal issue, it's a tough negotiation and one that will come to conclusion pretty quickly," said Reilly.

He's someone who lost his mother very early in a surprising way
The "Watch The Throne" rapper spent more than three hours posting numerous tweets discussing his struggles in the fashion moncler jackets industry, his views on politics and infrastructure, and being inspired by his late mother Donda to start a design company in her name.

Smith’s recent drafts have produced more busts than impact players
“Everybody knows in this business that you’ve got to win. OK?” Spanos said Tuesday. “That’s the moncler jackets net bottom line. You don’t have to say that.”
The Chargers haven’t been winning enough lately, which is why Spanos was forced to decide the future of his top football men. The Chargers are 17-16 since the end of the 2009 season, including an embarrassing home playoff loss to the New York Jets in January 2010 that was the Chargers’ last postseason appearance.
San Diego went 4-1 at the beginning and end of this season but was undone by a six-game losing streak in the middle. One more win would have earned the Chargers (8-8) the title in the mediocre AFC West.
Feeling that he has a good team with a marquee quarterback in Philip Rivers, “Keeping this intact gives us the best chance to win and change this thing as quickly as possible,” Spanos said.
Spanos said he was heartened by the players’ response to Turner in winning four of five down the stretch. The one loss, though, a rout at Detroit, eliminated the Bolts from playoff contention.
“I was confident that I had a good chance to stay here,” said Turner, who has two years left on his contract, at $3 million a season.
Turner has a 49-31 regular-season record in five years in San Diego but is only 3-3 in the playoffs.
“I would expect we’d have to make the playoffs” to stay employed, Turner said. “If we manage things right and have some good fortune, I imagine we will.”
Turner was an unpopular hire in February 2007 after Marty Schottenheimer was fired following a 14-2 season and a home playoff pratfall against New England.
When the news came that Turner would be back for a sixth season, fans reacted angrily on radio talk shows and the Internet. Some threatened to cancel their season tickets.
“Obviously, I’m very sensitive to what the fans have to say,” Spanos said. “I’ve come to the conclusion that I can talk until I’m blue in the face that this is the right thing to do. But until we go out and win and change the course of where this team has been heading, get back into the playoffs and make a serious run for the Super Bowl, anything short of that isn’t going to change their minds. We have to go out there next year and win.”
Rivers, who supported Turner in the closing days of the season, said he was “glad we are staying the course.”

“Sometimes the course isn’t always smooth,” Rivers said. “We’ve had a bit of bumpy ride the last two years . but there is plenty of history other places that if you just stick with it, stick with it, stick with it, you get to the top and that is what we are trying to get done.”
Rivers said there’s not much anyone can do to talk the fans out of the way they feel.
“You’ve got to win,” he said. “You tell them we’ll take the offseason like we are going to take it, and get geared up again. When September rolls around, I am quite confident they will be excited about us again.”
Turner is 107-113-1 in three stints as a head coach, including with Washington and Oakland. Both of those teams fired him.
“A lot of the fans never gave him a chance when he came here,” Spanos said. “I think it’s unfair. When you look at his record ... albeit, we’ve fallen off and we’re in the middle right now and it’s not where we want to be, but we are not the dregs of the league. And believe me, we were there. I’ve seen it. I don’t ever want to go there again. But I think he’s been treated unfairly. Until we all win, it’s probably never going to change.”
From the beginning, there was a perception that Smith wanted a puppet of a head coach after butting heads with Schottenheimer.
“They don’t understand the working relationship we have,” Turner said.
Many fans feel Turner is a great offensive mind but not a good head coach.
“Again, that’s such a cliché, I don’t respond to it because it’s easy to say,” Turner said.
Turner got the Chargers to the AFC championship game his first season before losing at New England. Since then, though, there’s been a steady decline in postseason success, with just one victory in four seasons.
Smith has come under fire for the erosion of talent from a roster that at one time was considered among the NFL’s best.
Smith’s best draft was in 2004, when he took Eli Manning with the first pick despite Archie Manning’s request that he not do so, then swapped the player’s rights to the New York Giants for Rivers and additional picks he used on kicker Nate Kaeding that year and Shawne Merriman the following year.
Smith’s recent drafts have produced more busts than impact players. Spanos said Smith’s drafts from 2007-09 “were not as good” as earlier drafts.
The Chargers ended the season with only three of their last seven first-round draft picks on the active roster.

But it's what follows New Year's Eve that could limit the revelry
A Saturday's New Year's Eve party on South Beach that also is doubling as LeBron James' birthday party, with the Heat forward turning 27 Friday.
According to moncler jackets the New York Post, James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and their significant others will be among the 50 or so at the Shelborne Hotel, with a post-dinner Lauryn Hill concert to follow.
But it's what follows New Year's Eve that could limit the revelry. The Heat not only have back-to-back home games on Sunday and Monday, against the Charlotte Bobcats and Atlanta Hawks, but then leave later in the week for a weeklong coast-to-coast trip that includes a New Jersey-San Francisco flight.
"They don't have a curfew," James said with a smile of his teammates at Saturday's dual celebration, "but we'll be ready come Sunday."
James, in fact, said he has cut back on the nightlife because of the compressed post-lockout schedule.
"I've already done that," he said. "There have been times when I may have wanted to go out and have dinner and I wound up on my couch, getting off my feet, instead."
Considering what he already has been through as a pro, James was asked before Friday night's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves if he felt 27 going on 47.
"Man, I've been around. I'm a vet now, a seasoned vet, honestly, my ninth year," he said. "I'm very humbled I'm able to be here. I'm very blessed."
Beasley's bane
Wade offered a somewhat measured take when asked about where former Heat teammate Michael Beasley stands amid his NBA second chance with the Timberwolves.
"Michael is an unbelievable talent," Wade said. "He can erupt any game, any moment. The ability that he has, to use both hands around the basket, finishing, his jump shot, I mean, he has all the tools.
"I think with Michael, it's just going to take him to continue to grow with the game, get into a winning environment and start understanding what this team needs from him. He's a good player. He's one of the best young moncler sale talents that we have in this game. But he has the potential to be a great player, if he wants it. That's what we always told him in Miami."
Asked where he currently stands, Beasley, dealt by the Heat to Minnesota in July 2010, said, "I'm still the same-old Mike, you all just see me a little different than past years, every year different, a little more disliked."
Remembering Barea
The lasting memory for the Heat of J.J. Barea will remain his breakout performance against the Heat with the Dallas Mavericks in the 2011 NBA Finals. Barea did not play Friday because of a hamstring issue.
Barea considered signing with the Heat in free agency before agreeing to a four-year, $19 million contract with Minnesota.
"He had a tremendous impact in the Finals," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "He's a very good basketball player that now has been rewarded for his play in this league.
"He was a game-changer, there's no doubt about it, because of his ability to get into the paint, create opportunities on random situations, situations you couldn't necessarily prepare for."
Been there
Both of the Heat point guards were obtained from the Timberwolves in draft-night deals, Mario Chalmers in 2008 and Norris Cole last June. Cole actually was selected by the Chicago Bulls with the No. 28 pick in the first round, dealt to the Timberwolves and then forwarded to the Heat within minutes on draft night.
"To be honest with you," Cole said, "my agent, he was well-informed. He just told me to be patient, because people were making moves and then when it was all said and done, it was the Heat. I knew something was going on."Moncler mens jackets, cheap moncler jackets for men, 70% off.
Cole came to the Heat at the cost of the first pick of the 2011 second round that the Heat had earlier obtained from the Timberwolves in the Beasley trade, cash and a 2014 second-round pick.

I see him off the field act the way you would want a major leaguer
During a 15-minute interview on MLB Network Radio, Valentine spoke about the recent acquisitions of reliever Mark Melancon moncler jackets and closer Andrew Bailey.
"The deals were in the hands of Ben and his baseball department and I think they've done a heck of a job of being patient, of being diligent, knowing what they want and going after it," Valentine said. "These two guys begin to fill a very big void that it seemed like we had after (Jonathan) Papelbon left and (Daniel) Bard was given an opportunity to go into the starting staff, along with (Alfredo) Aceves, and all of a sudden we went from the cupboard being bare to a cupboard that's plentiful, and we're all excited about."
Valentine and Bailey know each other well off the field as both reside in Connecticut.
Bailey and former A's teammate Craig Breslow, who is a native of Connecticut, formed the Strike 3 Foundation, which raises money for pediatric cancer research, and Valentine was the emcee for its annual event the past two years.
"I see him off the field act the way you would want a major leaguer, or for that matter a son or father to act," Valentine said. "He really is an upstanding young man and when I watched him on video, or I watched him on television during his career, I've been extremely impressed with his competitiveness and his ability to get both right- and left-handed hitters out. Hopefully, like he said, he's going to be healthy as this year comes on, and if he is, he's going to be a big plus to the Boston Red Sox."
With the presence of both Bailey and Melancon, it gives the Red Sox an opportunity to move Bard into a starter's role, at least to begin spring training and see what happens from there. It's not a guarantee that Bard will end up in the rotation.
"The first I heard of this was in my first moncler vest interview with Ben when we went through the roster and Ben was telling me some of the things he knew about the players, and I mentioned some of the things I thought about the players," Valentine said.
"From then, I got to talk with Daniel and some others in the organization, and Daniel is up for anything that's going to help the team and that's a real great thing for any player to say, but I think he says it with conviction. Yet, he also said, if that starting place is available, he'd like to have the opportunity to win the spot if all other things are equal. I said there's nothing wrong with coming to spring training, being mentally and physically ready to pitch multiple innings. In fact, if that doesn't work out, be ready for plan 1A and that would be where you've been the last couple of years. He was fine with that and so am I."
Another key component in the rotation is Clay Buchholz. The right-hander missed the majority of last season with a stress fracture in his lower back. If the Red Sox had reached the postseason, there was a strong possibility he would have been able to return in some role, likely out of the bullpen.
It was probably a good thing for Buchholz that he was able to continue his rehab, but he's telling Valentine he's ready to go.
"We are sure from his lips and our doctors' examinations that he's 100 percent healthy," Valentine said. "But he has not been time tested off the mound. He hasn't gone through the rigors of spring training, nor of a major league season. He's going to be watched closely, not only at the beginning, but at the end of 2012. Right now he says he feels great and I hope to get a chance to see him this weekend.
"I'm not asking him to do any pushups or situps or anything, but I'll be able to look into his eye and when he tells me he feels great I'll know that he's telling the truth. Researchers also want Grail to raise public awareness about the moon
NASA's twin Grail spacecraft are slated to start circling the moon one day apart, with Grail-A arriving on Saturday moncler jackets and Grail-B following on Sunday. The two probes will then fly around the moon in tandem, mapping the lunar gravity field in unprecedented detail and helping scientists better understand how the moon formed and evolved.
"This mission will rewrite the textbooks on the evolution of the moon," Grail principal investigator Maria Zuber, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said in a statement.
Precision flying
The $496 million Grail mission (short for Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory) launched on Sept. 10 from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
The two washing-machine-size probes have taken their sweet time since, charting circuitous, energy-efficient courses that will get them to the moon after more than three months of flying. Contrast that with NASA's manned Apollo 11 mission, which prioritized speed and got there in three days back in 1969.
Grail-A and Grail-B won't be ready to start their science campaign immediately upon arriving at the moon. Rather, they'll spend another two months circling lower and lower, eventually settling into orbits just 34 miles above the lunar surface, researchers said.
The twin probes will begin taking measurements in March. They'll chase each other around the moon for 82 days, staying 75 to 225 miles apart. [ Video: Grail's Mission to Map Moon Gravity ]

Regional differences in the moon's gravitational field will cause the two spacecraft to speed up or slow down slightly, changing the distance between them as they fly. Using microwave signals that they bounce back and forth to each other, Grail-A and Grail-B will gauge these distance variations constantly.
And they'll do so with incredible precision. The Grail probes will be able to determine how far apart they are from each other to moncler sale within a few microns — less than the width of a human red blood cell, researchers have said.

The Grail team will use the twin probes' measurements to construct highly detailed maps of the lunar gravity field. These maps should help scientists plan out future lunar landings, of both robotic and manned spacecraft, officials have said.
And the mission's observations should yield other benefits as well.
Specifically, Grail's data should reveal the moon's structure in great detail, allowing scientists to draw insights about how the rocky body formed and how it has changed over time.
"Grail is a journey to the center of the moon," Zuber told reporters Wednesday (Dec. 28). The two probes' measurements, along with data collected by other spacecraft, she added, "will enable us to reconstruct the moon's early evolution."
This information, in turn, could shed light on how other large objects in the inner solar system came to be, researchers have said.
An extended mission?
Grail's primary science work should wrap up in June. But the Grail team hopes NASA grants the two spacecraft a mission extension through next December, Zuber said. She and her colleagues want to take Grail even lower, to just 15 miles or so above the lunar surface.
"I call it flying over the treetops of the moon," Zuber said of the proposed extended mission. "We will take the spacecraft down as low as we can, to map, have a sensitivity to the shallowest, shallowest structures of the lunar crust."
Researchers also want Grail to raise public awareness about the moon, and to help engage kids in math and science. To this end, special cameras aboard the probes will be used to encourage middle school students to participate in lunar research and follow along with Grail, during both its nominal mission and any extended campaign.Moncler bags outlet, buy cheap moncler 2011 new bags.
The so-called MoonKam project, which will snap photos of the lunar surface for students on Earth, is led by former NASA astronaut Sally Ride and her educational company Sally Ride Science.

Thibodeau said similar words about Bryant
Taj Gibson and Joakim Noah blocked Kobe Bryant's shot at the buzzer to secure the victory.
The Bulls trailed moncler jackets 85-77 with 2 minutes remaining.
Rose led the Bulls with 22 points. Luol Deng added 21.
Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 28 points, including a difficult fallaway jumper with 54.6 seconds remaining to push the lead to six. Noah had failed to secure the defensive rebound on the second of Josh McRoberts' two missed free throws, losing the ball out of bounds, to set up that possession.
Deng made it a one-possession game by grabbing his own rebound and converting a three-point play with 45.1 seconds left. Deng then pulled the Bulls within one with 20.4 seconds remaining by making two free throws after Bryant fouled him on a rebound of Bryant's miss.
Rose didn't score until sinking a jumper shortly after checking in following a close-to-eight-minute rest with 6 minutes, 57 seconds left in the first half. He sank two 2-pointers late in the half and scored 10 to tie Carlos Boozer and Luol Deng for team-high honors as the Bulls built a 56-49 halftime lead.

Omer Asik and C.J. Watson, who also sank two 3-pointers, played well off the bench as Joakim Noah also endured foul trouble.
Deng closed the first half in strong fashion, sinking a 3-pointer from the corner and converting a three-point-play on a fast-break feed from Rose with 1.4 seconds remaining.
Before the game, Lakers coach Mike Brown sounded worried about Rose. And Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau fretted about Kobe Bryant. Sounded like the lockout is over and it's time for the NBA season opener.
"He's so fast and explosive," Brown said of Rose. "He's obviously extremely athletic and intelligent, a hard worker. It's not going to be one guy to stay in front of him. It's going to be a team effort."
Thibodeau said similar words about Bryant, who had been shooting left-handed in practice because of the torn ligament in his right wrist but will indeed shoot right-handed.

As soon as they detect the jolly fat man approaching North America
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has its 47 North Warning System radar installations moncler jackets pointed north, where they are watching for any signs Santa Claus has departed the North Pole.
Then, radar and satellite systems monitored by the Canadian Air Defence Sector Operations Centre at 22 Wing in North Bay, Ont. set their sets on the skies over Newfoundland and Labrador, where Santa and his sleigh are expected to enter Canadian airspace.
As soon as they detect the jolly fat man approaching North America, Captains Gregory Myers and Aaron Dhillon of 425 Tactical Fighter Squadron will be scrambled to welcome and escort him on the first leg of his Canadian delivery mission.
Deploying from 3 Wing Bagotville in Quebec, they'll fly their CF-18 Hornet fighter jets as official escorts while Santa makes his crucial deliveries across eastern Canada.
As Santa makes his way westward, the Commanding Officer of 410 Tactical Fighter Squadron, Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Hamilton, will be joined by Captain Corey Mask of 4 Wing Cold Lake, Alberta to assume escort duties over Western Canada.
Although the CF-18 has a top airspeed of Mach 1.8, the fighter jets are nowhere near as fast or manouverable as Santa's magical reindeer-powered sleigh.
Due to their longstanding relationship, moncler 2011 new men vests in blue outlet however, Santa will typically slow down enough to make contact with the escort jets.
To keep up with Santa's speedy progress, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) uses highly-secretive, geosynchronous satellite tracking technology. Even from their orbit at more than 36,000 kilometres above the Earth, the satellite's specially-calibrated infrared technology is able to detect the heat signature of Rudolph's glowing red nose.
To follow Santa's round-the-world journey, visit NORAD's purpose-built website www.noradsanta.org. Besides catching up on Santa's preparations for his whirlwind mission, visitors to the site can also watch exclusive video streams captured by strategically located "Santa cams" that NORAD maintains at locations worldwide.
These high-tech, high speed cameras are so fast they can actually capture high-resolution images that would otherwise appear to the naked eye as an impossibly fast-moving red streak.
Although this may seem to be a near-impossible technical feat, NORAD, and its predecessor Continental Air Defense Command, have been refining their methods of helping children and parents pinpoint Santa's location for more than 50 years.
It all began in 1955, cheap moncler jackets when a misprint in an advertisement inviting kids to phone Santa at the North Pole on Christmas Eve connected a young caller to a U.S. Air Force Colonel instead.
When Col. Harry Shoup realized the caller was inquiring about Santa's whereabouts, he ordered his staff to put their considerable expertise to use tracking the magical sleigh.
The operation has since grown into a year-round mission involving more than 1,500 NORAD staff and volunteers.

There has to be some link between the fact
The 17-nation currency advanced toward a one-week high against the dollar after Spain’s borrowing costs fell yesterday when the country sold more than its maximum target of bills. The dollar declined against moncler jackets 14 of its 16 major counterparts on reduced demand for a refuge as Asian equities rallied on signs the U.S. economic recovery is being sustained. The yuan advanced after Premier Wen Jiabao pledged to take measures to bolster exports, fueling optimism over China’s economic growth.
“There has to be some link between the fact that the sovereign supply that’s come onto the market recently has been so well received and what the ECB is doing here,” said Chris Weston, an institutional dealer at IG Markets in Melbourne. “We’ve got a little bit left in this euro rally. We’ll probably see more positive flows,” coming from the long-term refinancing operation, he said.
The 17-nation euro rose 0.2 percent to $1.3110 at 2:32 p.m. in Tokyo from yesterday in New York, when it touched $1.3132, the strongest since Dec. 13. Europe’s shared currency gained 0.1 percent to 101.99 yen. The dollar slid 0.1 percent to 77.80 yen.

Economists forecast banks would seek 293 billion euros ($384 billion), according to the median of 14 estimates in a Bloomberg News survey. Results will be announced today and the loans will start tomorrow.
Funding Needs
“By all accounts, the take-up is expected to be strong and markets would interpret this as positive,” Geoffrey Yu, a currency strategist at UBS AG in London, said in a note to clients. “Not only will some of the funding be recycled back into government debt, but banks would be able to secure financing for the immediate future and ensure financial stability in the coming quarters.”
UBS forecasts the euro will rise to $1.35 cheap moncler winter boots 2011 new style blue purple over the next month and trade at $1.30 in three months time.
Europe’s currency was supported yesterday after Spain sold 5.64 billion euros of three-month and six-month bills, exceeding a maximum target of 4.5 billion euros. The average yield on the three-month debt dropped to 1.735 percent, compared with 5.110 percent when the securities were last issued on Nov. 22.
The euro’s advance pared its decline this year against the greenback to 2 percent. The shared currency has fallen 6 percent against the yen since Dec. 31. The dollar has dropped 4.1 percent versus the yen this year.
The yen was little changed against the dollar after the Bank of Japan left its asset-purchase program unchanged while lowering its assessment of the economy, saying a pick-up has paused. The benchmark interest rate was held at a range of zero to 0.1 percent at the conclusion of a policy meeting today.
The dollar declined against the currencies of Australia and New Zealand as investors sought higher-yielding assets and the MSCI Asia Pacific Index of stocks rose 2 percent.
U.S. Housing
Demand for the greenback was also dented before a report that economists predict will show sales of previously owned homes in the U.S. rose in November. Purchases probably increased 2.2 percent, according to a Bloomberg News survey before data from the National Association of Realtors today.
Better U.S. economic data is unlikely to boost demand for the dollar given the Federal Reserve’s commitment to keeping the key rates near zero through mid-2013, said IG Markets’ Weston.
“We don’t think the good data will translate into dollar inflows especially against the risk currencies,” he said. “It’s likely to benefit the global growth currency trade, so the Aussie is going to be the place to be if we continue to see this data push up.”
The Australian dollar climbed as much as 0.7 percent to $1.0148 the strongest since Dec. 13. New Zealand’s currency gained 0.6 percent to 77.23 U.S. cents.
China’s premier said the nation will stabilize policies on exports, including rebates and capital support to small companies, according to a statement posted on the government’s website yesterday.
Wen’s comments boosted sentiment, said Banny Lam, a Hong Kong-based economist at CCB International Securities Ltd., a unit of China’s second-largest bank. “Inflation is easing but it will still hover at a relatively high level next year. That favors a stronger yuan to lower import prices.”
